Safe Key Replacement in Westchester County
Lost the only key to your safe, or snapped it in the lock? I am Oren, a licensed Westchester locksmith, and I originate replacement safe keys on site, extract broken keys, and replace worn safe locks, so a missing key never costs you the safe.
- New keys cut from the lock itself
- Broken key extraction
- Spare keys cut in the same visit
About this service
Plenty of safes are opened with a key rather than a dial or a keypad, and plenty of those safes came with exactly two keys, one of which vanished years ago. Safe key replacement is the fix: rather than replacing the safe, I originate a working key from the lock that is already in the door, and hand you a fresh set before I leave.
There are three versions of this call. In the first you still have a working key and simply want spares, which is the cheapest and easiest version and the one I wish more people booked. In the second every key is gone, so I open the safe first and then cut new keys to the lock. In the third the key has snapped, usually because it was worn thin and someone forced a stiff lock, and the stub is still sitting inside the cylinder.
If a key has broken off, the single most useful thing you can do is stop. Pushing the stub deeper, or fishing at it with a paperclip, turns a ten minute extraction into a lock replacement. Leave it where it is and call. I extract the broken piece, check whether the break damaged the lock wafers or the cam, and only then cut the new keys.
Worn locks are worth mentioning too. If the key has been getting stiffer for months, the lock is telling you something, and a brand new key cut to a worn lock will feel wrong within weeks. In that case I replace the lock body and supply keys with it, which keeps the safe you already paid for and gives you a mechanism that will last.
I work on the key-operated safes commonly found across Westchester homes and businesses: fire safes, document safes, gun safes, under-counter and drop safes, and the key override locks fitted to many electronic models. If the safe has an electronic keypad and a key override, and it is the keypad that has failed, see safe opening instead.
What I include
- New safe keys originated directly from the lock
- Broken safe key extraction
- Spare keys cut in the same visit
- Worn or damaged safe locks replaced with new keys supplied
- Key override locks on electronic safes
- A working test of the door and bolt work before I leave
Safe key replacement across Westchester County
The pattern of these calls is very consistent. Homeowners find an inherited safe in a basement or closet with no key anywhere in the house. Landlords and property managers take over a unit where the previous tenant kept the only key. Small businesses lose the under-counter safe key during a staff change and cannot get to the float. All three are routine, and all three are fixed in a single visit.
Dispatch is from Elmsford, minutes from I-287 and the Saw Mill River Parkway, so central Westchester is usually reached quickly. If you are in the county seat, my locksmith in White Plains, NY page covers neighborhoods and response times, and the locksmith Yonkers page covers the south of the county. The Westchester locksmith hub lists every town I serve, and the safe services hub covers the rest of the safe work I do.
My hours: Sunday open 24 hours, Monday through Thursday 6:30 AM to 11:30 PM, Friday 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM. I am closed Saturday. Call +1 (914) 875‑1894 and you reach me, Oren, directly.

Frequently asked questions
Can you replace a safe key I have lost?
Yes. On key-operated safes I can originate a new key from the lock itself, so a lost key does not mean a lost safe. If every key is gone I open the safe first, then cut and fit new keys before I leave.
My safe key snapped off in the lock. What now?
Do not force the stub, because pushing it deeper makes the extraction harder. I extract the broken piece, check the lock for damage from the break, and cut you a fresh set of keys.
Do you replace keys for fire safes and gun safes?
Yes. Fire safes, gun safes, document safes, and small office safes commonly use key override locks, and those are the ones I most often re-key or replace keys for.
Can I get spare safe keys made?
Yes, and it is much cheaper than the alternative. Once I have originated the first key I can cut spares in the same visit, which is the sensible moment to do it.
What if the safe lock itself is worn out?
If the lock is worn to the point where a new key will not solve it, I replace the lock body and supply new keys with it, so you keep the safe rather than buying another one.
How much does safe key replacement cost?
You get an upfront quote before any work starts, based on the safe and the lock. The price I quote is the price you pay, with no hidden fees.
